North Proposes Preparatory Dialogue on Asian Games

On July 10th, Pyongyang proposed
an inter-Korean meeting to deal with matters pertaining to the dispatch of North
Korean athletes and a cheering squad to the upcoming 17th Asian
Games in Incheon, South Korea.

The proposal was sent in the name of the chair of the North Korean Olympic
Committee to the head of the Asian Games organizing committee, stating that North Korea “propose(s) to hold North-South
working-level talks of officials concerned either in the North’s or South’s portion of Panmunjom on around July 15th to discuss issues
arising in the [North Korean] players group’s participation in the games and
the dispatch of the cheering squad.”

The South Korean government has already
stated that it will discuss matters concerning the passage of North Korean
athletes and the cheering squad, making it likely that the proposal will be accepted.
