ICC for Human Rights Abusers, COI Investigator Says

Investigator with the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) into
human rights abuses in North Korea Marzuki Darusman has reconfirmed the
commission is seeking to bring key members of the Kim Jong Eun regime before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The COI released its final report last February, providing damning evidence of state-sanctioned
human rights violations in the North and suggesting that those responsible are punished through international channels.

Speaking to press today at the Japan National Press Club, Darusman conveyed
that international channels for prosecuting the Kim Jong Eun leadership were currently being examined as a possibility for further action.

Commission members from the U.S.,
France and Luxembourg are set to strongly urge the UN Security Council to seek legal
action against Kim Jong Eun at the council’s next meeting on the 17th.

Darusman, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in North Korea, also urged Japan to adopt a new strategy in resolving North
Korea’s kidnapping of Japanese citizens during the 1970s-80s.

“In the past, this was an issue between North Korea and
Japan, but it is now an international issue,” he said.
