Sinuiju Through the Eyes of a Tourist

2013-10-23 17:33
After our four day trip to Chosun was over, we boarded a train headed for Dandong. During the last trip we were in a rush to get home so we didnt have a chance to look around Dandong, so this time we allowed for a day of sightseeing in the city.

We also planned spend a day in Sinuiju, Chosun. It cost 780 yuan per person. I first visited Sinuiju five years ago, when I arrived there from Dandong to transfer for a train bound for Pyongyang. At the time there were frequent power cuts, and I had to wait for three hours.

When we arrived in Sinuiju we saw so many people riding bicycles in the square next to the station. The men wore simple clothes and the women were dressed modestly. We also saw a teacher leading students to a statue of Kim Il Sung to lay flowers in front of it.

When most people come to Dandong, they only see Chosun from the opposite side of the Yalu River. Those who live in Dandong dont even think of going to the other side. I spoke to a Chinese man on the train who said he lived next to the Yalu River. When I said I was going to Chosun, he thought it was strange, saying Why are you going there? Its a destitute place. The only thing I could do was laugh.

If you take a boat down the Yalu you can get a glimpse into Chosun. Because the river is shared by both countries its okay to be on it as long as you dont step foot on the other side. Anyway, because I was going to Chosun later I thought that I wouldnt ride the boat, but changed my mind after I met with a man who shared his experiences. He said that you could throw cigarettes to people on the Chosun side of the river from the boat. One man who I ended up taking the boat with did this.

There were a few men on the Chosun side but right behind them were soldiers. I heard that those in the military cannot pick up the thrown items. As soon as the soldiers had disappeared, the tourist threw some clothing with cigarettes hidden under it. The man on the riverbank casually pretended to pick up the jacket, then took the cigarette. The man next to me explained that the people who picked up items that the tourists threw were not ordinary citizens. He said that if you didnt have connections (with the state), you couldnt even get near the rivers edge.
