The North Korean People's Balancing Act

[North Korea on "Victory Day"]
2013-08-20 16:01
In truth, most Chinese people have no interest in news stories about North Korea. Even my closest friends asked me why I would want to go there twice. I just wanted to see the changes happening in this remarkable country called “Chosun.”

On “Victory Day,” July 27th, there were many people on the streets and I had lots of opportunities to take pictures. The people of Pyongyang seemed more comfortable around foreign cameras than they had been five years ago. Mind you, that is not to say Pyongyang represents all of North Korea, any more than Beijing or Shanghai represent all of China.
