Chinese Images Belie “Tense” Situation

Following their third nuclear test on February 12th, the North Korean authorities embarked upon a concerted effort to drive up tensions in the Korean Peninsula region. Tourist visits for Chinese civilians were halted as part of this endeavor. However, visits for business purposes continued, and one Chinese civilian has now revealed photos of the domestic North Korean situation during the latter part of this period. The images focus on the Pyongyang and North Pyongan Province regions.

Having travelled North Korea by train and car, the person subsequently uploaded the following images onto their private blog. The photographer was unable to escape the frame of regime propaganda and control completely, of course, but the images still give a sense of the daily lives led by North Korean citizens. In particular, the rural images reflect the difficulties of the agricultural season.

The trip took place over five days in May, the blogger noted. It was their first trip to North Korea.
