The North Korean state media has reported significant typhoon damage in the wake of Typhoon Bolaven, which made landfall on the country¡¯s west coast yesterday afternoon.
According to Chosun Central News Agency (KCNA), Singye County in North Hwanghae Province was hardest hit, with gale force winds of 27m/s between 3PM and 9PM yesterday, while many areas of both North and South Hwanghae saw gusts well above 20m/s.
At the same time, KCNA reported that Samcheon County, Eunryul County and Kwail County in South Hwanghae Province and Daeheung County, Gangwon County and Cheonnae County in South Pyongan Province all received more than 100mm of rain as a result of the typhoon¡¯s passing.
Chosun Central TV also featured heavy coverage of the typhoon, revealing serious damage to 700 ¡®jeongbo¡¯ [a Korean unit of measurement equaling 2,975km©÷] of farmland and broadcasting footage of uprooted trees and lost roofs.
¡°The rainfall and high winds are having an exceedingly serious effect on the people¡¯s economy and especially provincial farming areas,¡± the narrator noted. ¡°In Kaesong, power lines are down and electricity supplies have been cut.¡±
South Korea¡¯s meteorological authorities confirmed much of the news coming from North Korea this morning, with an official telling Daily NK, ¡°Between 6PM and 9PM on the 28th, the strongest winds, 27m/s, blew in Singye. The strongest winds were in provincial areas of Hwanghae, but winds of at least 10m/s blew in other provincial areas, too.¡±
