Rodong Shinmun today reported that North Korea will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the birth of Kim Jong Il on February 16th with a festival of Kimjongilia, a type of begonia created for and named after the late leader.

According to the publication of the Chosun Workers¡¯ Party, ¡°As the entire people¡¯s poignant longing for and inexhaustible trust in respected comrade Kim Jong Il just keeps getting stronger, Gwangmyungsung Day will see the opening of the splendid 16th Kimjongilia Festival in the revolutionary capital, Pyongyang¡±

As previously reported, the Politburo handed down a decision on the 12th which, aside from authorizing the construction of statues of Kim Jong Il, also renamed his birthday ¡®Gwangmyungsung Day.¡¯

According to Rodong, participants in this year¡¯s festival will include military units and the Ministry of the People¡¯s Armed Forces, organs under the auspices of the Secretariat, Chongryon and other fraternal overseas groups, workers at every level, youth and student organizations and important figures from abroad.

Kimjongilia first appeared in 1988 after a Japanese grower crossbred it into existence and presented it to Kim Jong Il to commemorate the North Korean leader¡¯s 46th birthday. Kimilsungia, meanwhile, had been so-named during a 1965 trip to Indonesia by the North Korean founder.

However, the Kimjongilia Festival itself did not come into being until 1997, the year of Kim¡¯s 55th birthday. It has been held every year since.
