Kim Jong Il recently conducted an onsite inspection of the ¡°March 5th Youth Mine¡± in Jakang Province, according to a Chosun Central News Agency report released on Saturday, a surprise move with the Chosun Workers' Party Delegates' Conference supposedly impending.
¡°Comrade Kim Jong Il looked around the strip mine, dressing plant and other processes for a long time and discovered technical developments and the reality of production,¡± the KCNA said, adding, ¡°He expressed his great satisfaction with technical developments meeting the requirements of the age.¡±
Chief Secretary of Jakang Province Park Do Chun, Vice Chairman of the National Defense Commission Jang Sung Taek and other directors from the Central Committee of the Party including Kim Kyung Hee, Tae Jong Su and Hong Seuk Hyeung accompanied Kim, according to KCNA.
If true, Kim¡¯s move would be surprising, since the Delegates¡¯ Conference is allegedly just around the corner, meaning Kim was expected to be in Pyongyang, preparing for it.
On this, Cheong Seong Chang, a South-North relations researcher at the Sejong Institute, told The Daily NK, ¡°It looks like a move to comfort the people because public opinion has been agitated by the flood, and restoration will take more time.¡±
However, Lee Gyo Deok, a researcher with the Korea Institute for National Unification, pointed to the folly of trusting the KCNA announcement, which was not dated and cannot be verified. ¡°The news of Kim Jong Il¡¯s onsite inspection as reported by North Korean media cannot be completely trusted,¡± he said. ¡°It is one way by which to eliminate suspicions about Kim Jong Il¡¯s health condition.¡±
However, Cheong contended, ¡°If he had problem with his health, he couldn¡¯t have watched performances and gone to China. It doesn¡¯t seem that he has had problems with his health.¡±
KCNA released news of Kim Jong Il watching performances by the Escort Command for three consecutive days from August 8th.
