In an unprecedented move, North Korea has today singled out South Korean journalists and experts by name. The list of names appeared on Uriminzokkiri, a propaganda website run by North Korea’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland.
The South Korean conservative press was also criticized for “raising the frequency with each passing day of broadcasts containing scheming messages.”
In a piece entitled “What the Trumpets of the Puppet Conservative Press and Literary Hacks Must Bear In Mind,” South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, KBS, MBC and Daily NK were condemned as tools through which the South Korean government "justifies their plans to resurrect dictatorship and incite fraternal confrontation.”
It was also asserted that the conservative press wears the mask of ‘journalist,’ ‘expert,’ and ‘professor.’ In reality, according to the piece, they are in fact “vicious, extreme-right reactionaries who remain ever-ready to plot against the North with lies and falsities.”
A total of 18 South Koreans were name-checked, including So Hyeon Jeong of KBS, Park Jong Jin of TV Chosun, Kim Hyeong Kyeong of MBC, An Gyeong Sik of SBS, Chosun Ilbo Editor Kim Tae Ik, Chosun Ilbo Head of International Affairs Kang In Seon, Dong-A Ilbo reporter Ju Seong Ha, Korea University’s Kim Sung Hwan and Nam Seong Ok and Mun Sun Bo of the Sejong Institute.
The site categorized the targeted individuals into several groups; “those experienced in scheming,” ‘those who insult our highest dignity” and “those who arouse inter-Korean distrust and confrontation.”
It was further added that, “Our will for peaceful talks are demeaned as ‘typical salami tactics.’ They say that the ‘Uriminzokkiri' slogan is deceptive. While spewing increasing amounts of offensives against the North, they engage in rash acts that insult the highest dignity of our Republic without hesitation.”
Finally, “The current conservative powers suppress the progressive elements that assert independence, democracy and reunification for South Chosun. The puppet party has the media under their thumb, and is using them to construct a ‘second Yushin dictatorship system.’”
