The daily publication of North Korea¡¯s ruling Chosun Workers¡¯ Party, Rodong Sinmun reported yesterday on an international seminar on SEZs (Special Economic Zones) held in Pyongyang on the 16th and 17th by the Chosun Economic Development Committee.
The piece confirmed that in addition to North Korea¡¯s four existing SEZs, Rason, Hwanggeumpyeong-Wihwa Island, the Kaesong Industrial Complex, and the Mt. Geumgang International Tourist Zone, this year another fourteen SEZs have been created around the country.
It also cited a statement by Professor Kang Jong Nam of Kim Il Sung University¡¯s Faculty of Law, who told the seminar that ¡°the main areas of concern¡± in terms of SEZs are ¡°the existing situation, outlook and legal systems.¡±
¡°Legal measures are being adopted to cover development and administration, and existing legal regulations are being modified and supplemented,¡± the piece asserted.
According to the piece, economists and other academics from Canada, Malaysia, America, India and China took part in the event, along with members of the Chosun Economic Development Committee itself, Kim Il Sung University and other domestic economics faculties, and experts from the Academy of Social Sciences. It declared, ¡°Workers from varied fields, all of whom are working toward regional economic development, including at Rason, were in attendance.¡±
