The Rodong Sinmun reported today that the potato harvest has begun in Daehongdan County, an area surrounding Mt. Baekdu in North Korea's Yanggang Province.
The article introduced the story, saying that members of the cabinet and Central Party departments were actively supporting Daehongdan County and that "drivers with the Daehongdan County potato transportation unit, by managing their rotation well to bring up their collection rate, gathered each and every potato.
According to the report, the potatoes are immersed several times into water to remove the starch. Part of the waste produced during this process is distributed to the people, and part used as livestock feed.
Some defectors have claimed that many of these processed potatoes are of poor quality; they are not well-cleaned, they have been eaten by bugs, or they are riddled with holes where sand has entered and cannot be removed.
Ri Kyong Ae (assumed name), a 49-year-old hailing from the Daehongdan region, told Daily NK, In the factory where the Daehongdan Country potatoes are processed, the starch is mixed in with a lot of sand and grit. The 'potato water' does not infuse well and it gives off a rotten smell. The sanitary conditions are not good. People are saying, It would be better to just distribute the potatoes, rather than processing them first.
