North Attacks Impending Military Drills

Rodong Sinmun, the official publication of the Chosun Workers’ Party, carried an article on the 31st critical of the upcoming joint U.S.-South Korea “Ulchi Freedom Guardian” (UFG) training drills, stating that “the situation on the Korean Peninsula is once again facing eruption into a vicious, unpredictable war.”

In a piece entitled “We Must Pulverize and Throw Out America’s Ambition for Supremacy,” the publication asserted, “Last spring the state of tension on the Korean Peninsula intensified to its maximum. The underlying cause of this war threat was UN Command.”

It insisted, “UN Command remains intact, so the state of tension on the Korean Peninsula can never be alleviated, and shows that we cannot think about peace and security.”

“UN Command is an unlawful, secretive, bogus agency that came into being after America provoked the Chosun War,” it went on. “UN Command must be destroyed before the state of tension on the Korean Peninsula can be relaxed and an environment can be created in which the safety and peace of the Asia-Pacific region is assured.”

The piece also criticized U.S. President Barack Obama’s decision to attend a commemorative event in Washington DC for the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Korean War armistice last weekend.

President Obama called the war a victory for South Korea, to which Rodong Sinmun retorted that it is absurd that Obama had “the impudence to reverse the results of the Korean War.”

“The loser cannot become the victor. History can never be distorted,” it added.

On this, Park Young Ho, a senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification told Daily NK, “North Korea always criticizes this, saying that the joint U.S.-South Korea drills, which are routinely implemented every year, are in preparation for the invasion of the North.”
