Potato Stocks Shrink on Poor Summer Weather

The knock-on effect of a poor growing season has arrived on the potato farms of northerly Yangkang Province, where farm laborers have received just two thirds of their normal distribution.

A source from the region told Daily NK yesterday, In most years we get three months of potatoes in autumn, but this year that didnt happen. Whereas last year we got 200kg for three months, this time around we got just 120kg, enough for two months.

The reduced distribution has raised concerns over winter food insecurity for a lot of farming families, the source added. In northerly upland areas of North Korea, potatoes ordinarily replace corn as the cheap staple food eaten instead of rice.

It rained too heavily in July and the beginning of August, so a lot of potato fields got immersed, the source concluded. If the potato tubers cannot develop properly from the start then the harvest also ends up bad.

"The winter will obviously be quite tough, but early next year is a bigger concern," she added.
