The North Korean authorities have started granting full Internet access to representatives of companies visiting the country for investment meetings and seminars, sources from China have informed Daily NK. This is being done to show a desirable investment environment, the better to attract foreign capital to the country.

A Chinese trader with a long history of dealings with North Korea reported to Daily NK on the 21st, "Chinese and foreign businesspeople getting invited to North Korea by North Korean companies have been asking their hosts for Internet access, and I hear the North Korean authorities have been acquiescing.”

“They’ve mainly been needing to discuss the content of investment meetings with overseas colleagues," the source, based in Dandong, explained.

According to the source, granting permission for Internet access in this way shows the desire of local industrial units and government agencies to “provide the greatest convenience to businesspeople so as to attract investment and generate results.”

The source mused, "Internet access was approved so that foreign businessmen could send their counterparts photos of factory sites and such like, and to facilitate prompt business discussions with overseas staff. Allowing foreigners to access the services that they would use at home is a great way to win them over."

The source noted also that North Korea's willingness to allow information to circulate is underpinned by a degree of confidence that they can control who has access to that information, and what kind of information reaches the local population.
