Village Life In Pictures

Daily NK has obtained images of North Korea captured on the Chinese border.

The pictures were shot by a source at the beginning of September and provide a glimpse into village life.

Most of the border villages shown feature clusters of small, run-down houses. Well-maintained structures are likely police boxes or revolutionary study centers where citizens can learn about the Kim family.

In some border areas, repair work is being carried out on roofs painted in Chinese-style colors. Political slogans hailing construction as step toward becoming an “economically powerful nation” also meet the eye.

Hoeryong, the birthplace of Kim Jong Il’s mother Kim Jong Suk, is in relatively good shape compared with nearby Musan. Most rooftops in the town have been painted blue, and the buildings are outwardly well-preserved.

The source confirmed that North Korean authorities have passed the order to “adorn the hometown of Kim Jong Suk” for some years now, but added, "How much meaning can there be in fancy, superficial decoration to the people of Chosun who find it hard to eat three meals a day? What the people truly desire is to be free from worry over where their next meal is coming from. But the authorities continue to only focus on beautification tasks.”

Villagers are also shown plucking weeds and fish out of the Tumen River with sticks. While this is an everyday sight, there has been little effort made toward easing the difficult lives of the people. The source reports that every North Korean they met emphasized the same problem; “food shortages.”

Although sentry posts dot the riverside, new posts are being built alongside existing ones. Barbed wire fences are also going up, even in restricted areas. Soldiers decked out in combat attire move between the sentry posts and appear to be on high alert.
