Daily NK recently obtained video footage of real life inside North Korea. Filmed in the aftermath of the country's third nuclear test on February 12th, a time when civilian and military training exercises were ongoing, it contains footage of neglected child beggars, private commerce underway in official and unofficial markets, and prostitution. It also contains these images of an educational handbook.

Entering Kim Jong Eun’s second year in power, the work of idolizing the new leader of North Korea shows no sign of abating. Party and military cadres, as well as organizations at every level of society, receive daily and weekly lectures and educational sessions explaining Party policy, justifying the third generation succession and praising Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il’s legacies.
Now, Daily NK has obtained footage of a booklet of lecture and educational guidance for such organizations. As per the main political propaganda narrative, it explains how Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il succeeded in creating a powerful socialist state, while Kim Jong Eun is the only one who is both pure-blooded and wise enough to complete the project.
Coming in at less than twenty pages, the booklet, which was published in January, 2012, starts with an essay about the public education system established by the “great General (Kim Jong Il),” before going on to relay a second piece, “On victory in the ideological and legendary work of the great General thanks to respected Comrade Kim Jong Eun.”
It states, “Respected comrade Kim Jong Eun has extraordinary ideological and theoretical knowledge and multi-faceted insight,” adding, “The leader who honors the ideology and great achievements of the Suryeong must possess an ideological and theoretical wisdom and varied insight much better than anybody else.”
Interestingly, the booklet stresses that Kim started writing expansive prose about Kim Il Sung’s military leadership and great achievements even during his teens, which is when he was actually in Switzerland studying, meaning that the claim is either a fabrication or an extreme exaggeration of historical reality.
“In actuality, when viewed historically there are many great men who harbored ideological and theoretical prescience and wrote tracts on it,” the text proclaims. “They first published books when in their 20s. However, respected comrade Kim Jong Eun had already started his writing when he was in his teenage years. He was 16 years old when he wrote a thesis about the fatherly Suryeong’s splendid achievements and the military leadership that brought victory in the Fatherland Liberation War.”
Aside from a deep and varied knowledge of military affairs, the booklet goes on at length, “[Kim] is very knowledgeable about music and the arts, and there is no sport he cannot do. Not only that, he is also deeply versed in world affairs and nutrition; no subject stops him in his tracks.”
Conversely, however, and quite aside from the fundamentally implausible nature of the propaganda statements contained in the booklet, there is also evidence, as reported by Swiss daily ‘Le Matin’ in April last year, that Kim Jong Eun was not a good student at all. According to Le Matin, Kim was absent for 75 days in his first year in Berne, Switzerland and 105 days the next, and his grades were also poor. The article claims that Kim’s natural science grade was 3.5 on a scale of 6, while his grades in mathematics, culture, social, German were also barely good enough to pass.
