Men Following Women Down Skincare Path

Even upwardly mobile young North Korean men have an interest in skincare products nowadays, it has emerged.

As is the case around the world, North Korean male grooming is quite a long way behind that of women, a source from Pyongyang told Daily NK earlier today, but there is still definitely a market for it.

The source explained, ¡°Now most of the items young men use do come from South Korea. This is because young women watch South Korean dramas, and then recommend the stuff in them to everyone else, which causes young men to follow¡±

For example, ¡°One South Korean product that has just become popular is the brand ¡®The Boy with the Flower,¡¯¡± the source said, referring to a common brand known in the South for its hair dye. ¡°The brand became popular last year, when the South Korean actor Hyun Bin advertised it after being in the drama ¡®Secret Garden.¡¯¡±

According to multiple sources, men in North Korea would not have been seen dead using skincare products until ten years ago, but as the number of officials going on business trips to China and elsewhere grew, so usage slowly began to grow, too.

¡°South Korean media started coming in, leading women to prefer men with nice white skin; therefore, men who wanted to look good in front of women had to use those products that were recommended to them,¡± the source said.

There used to be a problem with fake products made across the border in China, but that is less of an issue now, the source added, noting, ¡°Now they are only circulating in North Korea via people who only deal in South Korean products.¡±
