Parade Propaganda on Display

The large-scale military parade held yesterday to mark the 65th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK aimed to promote the legitimacy of third generation succession. Unlike previous parades, little in the way of heavy weaponry was on display.

Banners proclaimed “Juche,” “Defend the Kim Jong Eun System to the End,” and “Independence, Self-Reliance, and Self-Defense.” Photos of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il were also held high. Other signs reading “Focus on Science” and “Strengthen Physical Education” drew additional attention to the personal achievements of Kim Jong Eun.

One North Korea expert told the Daily NK, “Bar the 60th anniversary of the DPRK in 2008 when Kim Jong Il was sick in bed, military parades have traditionally been held on important anniversaries. On Victory Day (July 27th) they mobilized a great number of people and put their armory on display, but perhaps as resources like vehicle fuel are in short supply they didn’t do it this time.”

The source continued, “We can see that the regime held the military parade in order to strengthen internal solidarity and allegiance amongst the citizens of Pyongyang. I heard that there are even incidents where those in charge raise funds from civilians in order to prepare for such events.”

“Kim Jong Eun has gained confidence during his two years of rule, and he has tried to show that North Korea is a normal nation. At the same time he wants to show the world that he reigns supreme. That is why he invited so many foreign supporters of North Korea to the parade.”

Meanwhile, North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun today dedicated an unprecedented eight pages showcasing Kim Jong Eun’s achievements. Of particular note was his “Focus on Science,” which included 35 photos of the young leader touring new residences earmarked for scientists on the aptly named “Unha Scientists’ Street.”

The source adds, “In publishing such propaganda the intent is to promote Kim Jong Eun’s achievements, rather than the inherent benefit of the new residences. It seems even the Rodong Sinmun is adopting ‘Kim Jong Eun style.’”
