The number of North Koreans who have died over the last ten years as a result of disasters is the 5th highest in Asia, a new report claims.
According to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies-produced World Disasters Report 2012, which was released on the 16th, 77,747 North Koreans died in disasters in the period 2002-2011, compared to 1,401 in South Korea. Only Indonesia (182,000), Myanmar/Burma (139,000), China (116,000) and Pakistan (81,000) saw more deaths.
A further 9.74 million North Koreans were hurt or suffered damage as a result of disasters in the period, the 8th highest in Asia. The statistics exclude death and injury/damage due to war, only counting accidents, natural disasters and industrial incidents.
