Park: Can Meet Kim and Discuss West Sea

Saenuri Party presidential candidate Park Geun Hye has declared her willingness to meet Kim Jong Eun if it will result in improved inter-Korean relations.

When asked during a press interview at Saenuri Party HQ in Yeouido yesterday whether or not she would be prepared to meet Kim, Park declared, “I believe that if meeting someone will help to improve inter-Korean relations then I must meet them.”

If such a meeting came to pass, it would not be the first time. Park also discussed ways to improve inter-Korean relations with Kim Jong Il during a visit to Pyongyang back in 2002, a period of warmer inter-Korean relations.

Park also added that she would be prepared to engage in discussion with Pyongyang over the transformation of the disputed West Sea into a joint fishing area/peace park, as declared under the October 4th Inter-Korean Summit Agreement.

When former President Roh Moo Hyun negotiated the agreement with Kim Jong Il during the 2nd inter-Korean summit in 2007, it was noted that the West Sea has long been a source of undesirable “accidental clashes”.

However, at the time Roh’s agreement was also criticized from the right for entangling South Korea in what is said to be North Korea’s strategic goal of casting doubt over the legitimacy of Seoul rule in the West Sea area.
