Two UN agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP), will send a team to North Korea during the period September 24th to October 8th to investigate the size and quality of the grain harvest, Voice of America reported today.

The FAOs North Korea head, Kisan Gunja told VOA that the investigation team would be heading to North Korea earlier than last year in order to review the situation on the ground before the harvest has been gathered in its entirety, thus making it possible to observe the state of the plants in the rice paddies.

This will give the two organizations a better indication of possible areas of need over the winter. There are concerns that year's harvest will be down on last year's and some way below minimum levels of need, following a torrid summer of drought, flooding and, yesterday, a typhoon.

The two organizations have been conducting missions to North Korea once or twice a year since 1995 upon invitations issued by Pyongyang, with the exception of the period 2005-2009, when the North did not issue an invitation.
