The Committee for the Release of North Korea Human Rights Activist Kim Young Hwan yesterday stepped up its attempts to secure the release of Kim and three other men being held by the Liaoning Province arm of the Chinese Ministry of State Security, hosting a press conference in Seoul to call on the people of South Korea to join the campaign to get Kim released and reveal plans to take the issue to the UN.

The Chinese government must release the four South Koreans immediately, a press release put out by the Committee at the event asserted. Forced imprisonment of South Koreans by the Chinese authorities is against Chinas national interest and violates Korea-China friendship. Therefore, the committee asks the Chinese government to be a responsible member of international society and release the four South Koreans, including Kim Young Hwan.

In addition to calling for the immediate release of the four men, the Committee also demanded the following: consular and legal access for all the men in accordance with international law; an investigation into North Korean involvement in their arrest; and greater involvement of the South Korean government and international society in the campaign to secure their release.

On the final demand, the Committee stated that it will prompt this by cooperating with UN organs and international human rights groups in order to make this an international human rights issue, reaffirming that requests are to be submitted to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and UN Special Rapporteur on Torture. It also added that the Committee is aiming to involve international NGOs including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch alongside the Secretariat of the International Coalition to Stop Crimes against Humanity in North Korea (ICNK).
