North Performs Double KN-01 Test

North Korea today tested two short range KN-01 surface-to-ship missiles, firing them into the West Sea.

The KN-01 missile, which North Korea refers to as the ¡®Keumho-1¡¯, has a range of 100-120km.

The launch of KN-01 missiles of this nature is unrelated to next month¡¯s planned launch of a satellite using the ¡®Unha-3¡¯ launch vehicle. It appears to be a warning message for the U.S. and South Korean military in the disputed West Sea to say that North Korea has reinforced the arrangement of its coastal defenses, a military source told Daily NK.

According to Kim Jin Moo, a researcher with the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, ¡°North Korea¡¯s test of short-range missiles is something they have been doing as part of winter training for the last four or five years, so it looks like a normal launch test to improve accuracy.¡±
