North and South in U.S. Debate Showdown

North Korea’s chief negotiator to the Six-Party Talks, Vice Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho stated at a seminar in the U.S. yesterday, “The basis for resolving the nuclear issue starts with the elimination of the U.S.’ hostile policy towards North Korea.”

Ri repeated the regularly cited North Korean claim during his presentation at a seminar jointly hosted by Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Germany’s Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

Meanwhile, chief South Korean negotiator Lim Sung Nam apparently emphasized that North Korea actioning in full the agreement it reached with the U.S. in Beijing last month represents a shortcut to the reopening of the Six-Party Talks.

Ri is said to have responded, “It is advisable that the South side implement the June 15th and October 4th Declarations.”

The closed-door seminar continues today, March 9th, after which a statement of the results is to be released.
