National Assembly Passes Repatriations Resolution

South Korean lawmakers adopted a resolution calling for a halt to the forced repatriation of defectors via a meeting of the Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification Committee this morning.

The resolution asserted, We hereby denounce the Chinese governments forced repatriation of defectors and urge change on the part of the Chinese government, effort from the international community and cooperation at the National Assembly level to stop forced repatriation. It also calls for the Chinese government to follow the UN Refugee Convention in its dealings with defectors.

The motion was brought by Park Sun Young of the Liberty Forward Party, with support from a total of 29 lawmakers including Saenuri Party (formerly Grand National Party) lawmaker Hwang Jin Ha and Democratic United Party (formerly Democratic Party) lawmaker Shin Nakyun.
