“People of China, please help us stop the repatriation of North Korean defectors. I am pleading with you to be a ray of light in this world we live in together.”

Yesterday afternoon, more than 20 South Korean entertainers including drama star Cha In Pyo, comedienne Lee Seong Mi and Korean-American actor Ricky Kim joined hands outside the Chinese embassy in northern Seoul to urge China to stop repatriating North Korean defectors.

They were joined by more than 30 students from Yeomyung School, a Seoul-based alternative school for young defectors which the entertainers have been supporting.

Reciting an appeal to the Chinese government, Cha In Pyo stated, “Defectors are among the weakest people in the world, so their voices cannot be heard. In their stead, we appeal to the Chinese government and Chinese people.

“Please protect them, as friends living in the same era, in the same world,” he added.

“Through supporting Yeomyung School, we have forged relationships with many defectors,” Lee Seong Mi added. “Thinking of defector children and then hearing news of forced repatriations; I couldn’t just sit idly by so I came here today.”
