According to a report from the Korean Central News Agency on January 22, Kim Jong Eun recently inspected the command centre of the ‘Large Combined Unit 671’, a corps based in South Hamgyung Province. This was the fifth such inspection since Kim began the grand tour at the Ryu Kyung Su Tank Division on January 1.
The frequent inspections are interpreted in some quarters as an attempt to prove that the ‘military first’ politic is being continued as it was under Kim Jong Il. Many analysts believe Kim is trying to display that he has the army on his side in order to speed up the completion of the power transfer and solidify systemic unity.
On this visit, Kim visited the corps’ revolutionary history learning center and study facilities, examined the unit’s performance of assigned duties, visited the military lecture theatre and scrutinized the training methods of commanders and unit staff.
Vice-Chairman of the National Defense Commission Jang Sung Taek, Operations Department chief Kim Myung Gook, General Kim Won Hong and lieutenant general Lee Du Seong all accompanied Kim Jong Eun on the visit.
