The number of people belonging to separated families in South Korea dropped over the last year from over 82,000 to less than 80,000.

The number of separated family members registered on Reunion, the South Korean Integrated Information System for Separated Families, has fallen from its total of 128,668 to 78,892,with 49,776 of those registered having now passed away.

82,477 living members of separated families were still registered on the system at the end of 2010, marking a net reduction of 3,585 people. There were 3,792 deaths since that time, with 207 new registrations on the system.

These figures mean that the total number of registered survivors has dropped from 64.2% at the end of 2010 to 61.3%.

The number of survivors aged in their seventies and above increased sharply over the last year from 76.7% of the total to 80.1%.

8.3% are aged 90 or above, 39.3% aged 80-89 and 32.5% aged 70-79. In 2010, those numbers were 5.3%, 34.6% and 36.8% respectively. The most marked increase was in the number of survivors entering their eighties.

The dwindling numbers of aging survivors show that time is running out for separated families to obtain closure on decades of separation.
