Jets and Missiles Stationed Near NLL

South Korean intelligence authorities have confirmed the stationing by North Korea of fighter jets and surface-to-air missiles in its southwest quadrant nearest the Northern Limit Line (NLL) and South Korean Baekryeong Island.

A source from within South Korean intelligence told the Daily NK on the 12th, “We have picked up the movement of mobile missile launchers at a missile base in North Korea territory near the maritime NLL. Since it matches the visit of President Lee Myung Bak to the United States, there is the possibility of a military provocation.”

The intelligence authorities say the current signs of movement resemble those picked up immediately before the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island on November 23rd, 2010, and have stepped up surveillance efforts.

Prior to leaving for the U.S., President Lee received an intelligence report to this effect and reportedly instructed military authorities to “punish strongly” North Korea if a provocation were to occur.
