Defense Minister Threatened with Death

Intelligence has been obtained suggesting a plan to assassinate South Korean Minister of National Defense, Kim Gwan Jin.

According to a government source cited by the Joongang Ilbo today, “There is intelligence that North Korea intends to assassinate Minister Kim Gwan Jin, so we are paying close attention and making checks when Minister Kim has an outside appointment.

Military and intelligence authorities are currently working to establish the ins and outs of the North Korean plan.

Whenever Kim has an outside appointment, he is protected by a number of plain-clothed guards, and whenever he eats in a public location both the safety of the restaurant and surrounding areas are investigated in advance.

Kim, who took the reins at the Ministry of National Defense following the Yeonpyeong Island attack last year, has made it clear that in the event of a further North Korean provocation he would order a powerful response.

For its part, North Korea has heavily criticized him for his stance, insisting that they “must take nationwide measures for his execution in the name of the entire people.”
