[imText2]A North Korean fighter jet crashed in northeastern China yesterday, killing the pilot.
The plane, a Russian-built MiG fighter, came down in Lagu, Fushun-xian in Liaoning at around 3P.M., according to Xinhua News Agency.
The news agency reported that when the fighter jet first appeared in Chinese airspace, its nationality was unknown, but those authorities dealing with the crash subsequently confirmed that it was a North Korean jet. Now the Chinese authorities are investigating.
According to a source with Yonhap News, the Chinese authorities allege that the pilot may have broken away from his training program, lost his way while trying to defect to Russia, crossed into China and eventually crashed.
[imText1]Images of the crashed plane uploaded by Chinese internet users are circulating; in one, the tail plane of a MiG-21 with a North Korean symbol on it is clearly visible.
Fushun is around 200km from Shinuiju, to the east of which lies Uiju, where there is a North Korean air base. The Chinese authorities presume that the jet took off from there.
