North Korean soldier defects to South through DMZ

Seoul’s military said a North Korean soldier defected to South Korea on Thursday morning (KST) by crossing the Military Demarcation Line, the inter-Korean land border.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that the soldier is currently being questioned about his motivation to come to South Korea and the process he followed to do so.
Since 2010, more than 60 North Koreans, both soldiers and civilians, have defected to South Korea by sneaking over the Military Demarcation Line or the inter-Korean maritime border, known as the Northern Limit Line.
