TV Debut for First Defector-Rapper!

A
young man who aims to become the world’s first North Korean defector-rapper is
to appear in the third season of Mnet’s
popular entertainment program, “Show Me the Money”. Kang Chun Hyeok is a
contestant in the first episode of the new series, which goes on air later
today, July 3rd.

During
pre-recording for the show, Kang introduced himself as “born in Onsung County,
North Hamkyung Province,” and added that he “escaped North Korea at the age of
12.” He then quickly grabbed attention by bellowing out, “To my fellow North
Koreans!” in his hometown accent.

Kang’s
creative background already includes two story books published by Kookmin
Press: “Do You Know What a Happy Kid I Am?” and “The Secret Diary of North
Korean Children,” both of which reveal harrowing details about the lives of
children just like him inside North Korea.

Holding
up a drawing of his own, Kang explained, “I once used pictures to spread the
truth about North Korea, and now I want to convey that same message through
rap.”

Speaking
with Daily NK about his rap ambitions before the show, Kang explained, “The
appalling reality of current life in North Korea, along with my own experiences,
prompted me to incorporate those themes into my rap lyrics. I hope my verses elicit
sympathy and understanding of the agony the North Korean regime inflicts on its
own people.”

“Show
Me the Money 3” begins on Mnet on
July 3rd at 11 pm.
