Chinese Media: Likelihood of 4th Test “Extremely High”

Chinese media has assessed the likelihood of North Korea
undergoing a fourth nuclear test as “extremely high.”

Citing an anonymous source, the Global Times, sister publication of state-run outlet the People’s Daily announced this morning that, “The attitude of North Korea’s foreign ministry indicates a
fourth nuclear test is likely.”

The U.S.-ROK joint military drills and key anniversaries are
important in terms of the timing of a fourth test, the piece added, before
likening the move to “throwing a joker during a card game.”

The statement comes after yesterday’s announcement by South
Korean military intelligence that activity at the Pungye-ri test area in North
Hamkyung Province has increased over the last few days.

North Korea’s foreign ministry warned on March 30th
that an additional test “cannot ruled out,” before threatening the test itself could take on a “new form.”

It is expected the North will face considerable pressure
through various political, economic and diplomatic channels should they go
ahead.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government confirmed on the 22nd
it is keeping close watch on events as they unfold and urged restraint from all
countries involved.
