New statistics reveal that 3,137,550 people were impacted by natural disasters last year in North Korea, of whom 147 died. Based on 2012 population statistics, this implies that 13% of the total North Korean population was detrimentally affected by natural phenomena in some way during the period.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) World Disasters Report 2013 shows that North Korea ranked 7th out of 49 countries in Asia for disaster victims in 2012.

Most notably, North Korea suffered heavy flooding from atypical monsoon rains from June and throughout the summer. The flood damage was then compounded by typhoons, in particular Typhoon Bolaven, which arrived at the end of August.

According to the report, between 2003-2012 a total of 1641 people were killed in North Korea by natural disasters, while 4,813,000 were adversely affected in some way. Interestingly, the report also concludes that a total of 610,678 people were killed in disasters in the period between 1993 and 2002. It is unclear how the figure was reached.

On October 21st, IFRC revealed that it plans to deliver $7,150,000 in aid projects for North Korea in 2014, and a further $7,960,000 in 2015.
