South Korea has incurred $806m in damages as a result of cyber attacks originating in North Korea, it has been revealed.

Cyber attacks on the South have mainly come in the form of hacking and DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks.

Saenuri Party lawmaker and National Defense Committee member Hee Soo Chung yesterday presented the results of an investigation by South Koreas military cyber command that analyzed total losses over the 2009-2013 period.

This years cyber attacks on March 20th and June 25th caused combined damage of $800m. The July 7th, 2009 DDoS attack cost $46.8m, while the March 4th, 2011 DDoS attack resulted in a $9.3m loss.

A total of 6392 cyber attacks have been instigated by the North since 2010.

North Korea has sought information relating to overseas trends following its missile launch, military responses, personnel changes in foreign military leadership and information on rank insignia.

While South Korea established a cyber command under the Defense Intelligence Agency in January 2010, its 400-strong staff cannot match North Koreas 3000-strong cyber division.

Lawmaker Chung claimed that, In order to conceal the source of the attacks, the North established an overseas base and created malignant code unable to be detected. They used a domestic zombie PC to carry out specifically targeted attacks.

In an environment where IT skills develop rapidly and the cyber warfare battlefield is changing, (South Koreas) cyber command is leaning more toward managing its existing strategies than improving its capacity to counteract an attack. It must strengthen its operational capacity in order to meet any attack by the North. It must also secure and train top personnel and pay full attention to the management of these issues, Chung emphasized.
