Ri Yong Gil has been appointed North Koreas Chief of General Staff, state media officially confirmed today.
North Koreas Chosun Central News Agency (KCNA) announced that Kim Jong Eun visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang to pay his respects to his grandfather and father, accompanied by Chief of the KPA General Staff Ri Yong Gil, Minister of Defense Jang Jong Nam and Politburo Presidium member Choe Ryong Hae.
South Koreas Ministry of Unification presumed as early as August that Ri had been given the position, but this is the first time North Korea has publicly confirmed the decision.
Ri previously commanded the KPA 5th corps based in Kangwon Province.
Former chief Kim Kyok Sik has not appeared in public since he attended a national meeting to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the countrys Songun leadership on August 24th.
While a reason has yet to proffered for the military shake-up, some North Korea experts query if the ejection of Kim, a military hard-liner, was a move aimed at improving relations with the South.
