POW Remains Returned to South

The remains of Son Dong Shik, a POW who died in the North in 1984, were returned to South Korea over the weekend.

A representative for the Mulmangcho Foundation, an organization working to repatriate South Korean POWs, stated that, The remains of Mr. Son were returned to his eldest daughter via Incheon International Airport. Mr. Son became a POW of the Peoples Army during the Korean War and was forcibly kept in North Korea until his death.

Born in 1925, Mr. Son died at the Aoji Coal Mine located in Kyonghung County, North Hamkyung Province. He had been a staff sergeant in South Korea's 9th Infantry Division at the time of his capture.

Mr. Son's eldest daughter Myungwha defected from North Korea in 2005, and worked to bring her father's remains to to the South. With assistance from the Mulmangcho Foundation and several other civic groups, she succeeded in bringing back his remains through China.

"My father was captured in April of 1953 and spent his entire life undergoing forced labor at the Aoji Coal Mine," Myunghwa said.

"Before he died, he called me and recited the names of his relatives including his grandfather, uncle and aunt. His dying instructions were to bury him in his hometown of Gimhae, South Gyeongsang province.

The South Korean Ministry of Defense transported the coffin draped in the South Korean national flag to the Seoul National Cemetery, where Mr Sons remains will undergo genetic testing to confirm his identity.

If the remains are indeed those of Mr. Son, it will bring the total number of repatriated POW remains to six.
