NK Human Rights Going Global

An international conference on North Korean human rights is to take place in Canada from September 27th to October 1st, and another in Europe from October 7th-12th.

The conference, which will be held in Toronto and Ottawa by the Seoul-based ¡°Free the NK Gulag,¡± is to commemorate the Canadian government¡¯s decision to designate September 28th ¡°North Korean Human Rights Day.¡± Attendees will hear commentary from human rights experts and testimony from survivors of North Korea¡¯s political prison camp system.

A Canadian lawmaker, Judy Sgro will host several special lectures, including one by Kang Cheol Hwan, the author of the best-selling ¡°Aquariums of Pyongyang."

Kang and other representatives from Free the NK Gulag have been invited to meet Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on October 2nd to provide testimony on the human rights situation in the North. Kang met President Bush in 2005, becoming the first defector ever to meet a sitting U.S. president.

Elsewhere, the annual North Korea Freedom Week will take place in various locations throughout Europe from October 7th–12th.

The week's events will include testimony and a lecture by Yodok Prison Camp survivor and Free the NK Gulag director Kim Young Sun. Also on the agenda is a North Korean human rights hearing, a forum, photo exhibitions and a film festival.
