The U.S. State Department has responded cautiously to the claim that North Korea may have restarted a 5MW research reactor at Yongbyon, with spokesperson Marie Harf telling reporters in Washington on the 12th, “Suffice to say if it was true, it would be a violation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and of course contrary to North Korea’s commitments under the September 19th, 2005 joint statement.”
However, she added, “We don’t comment on intelligence matters or on this issue one way or the other. I’m certainly not going to comment on this one way or the other.”
Elsewhere, speaking in Tokyo, the U.S.’ main point man on North Korea policy, Glyn Davies told reporters, "If it turns out these reports are true ... it would be a very serious matter.”
Department of Defense spokesperson George Little also commented on the issue, but told reporters that the situation is unclear and that no restart has been confirmed.
Little further affirmed that North Korean nuclear developments are all in violation of UN Security Council resolutions, as well as noting that efforts to achieve the denuclearization of North Korea shall continue.
