China Open to Six-Party Talks

Chinese Premier Xi Jinping has told President Obama that he hopes the Six Party Talks will begin again soon. The remarks were made during a meeting between the two leaders at the G20 summit in Russia on September 6th, Chinese state media has reported.

Premier Xi also told President Obama that, (China) is unyieldingly pursuing denuclearization, keeping stability and peace on the Korean peninsula, and demanding that dialogue and reconciliation occur.

He further added that (The Six Party Talks) must adhere to their original purpose as outlined in the 9.19 Joint Statement. Signed in 2005, the statement aimed to realize a denuclearized North Korea by having the country abandon its nuclear weapons and return to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

However during a briefing in Russia, White House deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes told reporters that the United States was not interested in the talks until North Korea demonstrates it is serious about denuclearization and dialogue.

Meanwhile, Premier Xi has sent a note of congratulations to Kim Jong Eun to mark the 65th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK. The note read, We sincerely hope that the people of Chosun will achieve great economic and social development.

The note also emphasized that, In continuing and strengthening the traditional friendship between our two countries, our citizens welfare will improve, and the region will see peace, stability, and development.

In his note of congratulations, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated, I am certain that the development of our bilateral relationship across many fields will contribute to the peace and security of East Asia.
