Seoul-based Young Defectors’ Alliance for North Korean Human Rights held its opening night performance yesterday of an original show titled “Yi Jung Sa Yeon.”
Performed by both defectors and South Koreans, the story tells of the ups and downs of life for young North Koreans living in the South.
The show’s director Lee Dae Yong says, “This show was created in the hope that all defectors may safely settle in the South and live happy lives. We hope that on the day unification occurs, they may make a triumphant return and be united once again with their family members still in the North.”
Lead actor Baek Jong Ho says, “I play the role of a dial-a-driver that picks up a defector. The character is not a defector himself, but he sees the how they are treated and begins to feel empathetic. I hope that the show will inspire the audience to also change how they view defectors in future.”
The show will continue its run until September 29th at the Samilro Theater in Myeongdong.
The Young Defectors’ Alliance for North Korean Human Rights works in education and advocacy-building, and holds events to connect young South Koreans and defectors.
