North Korean Refugees Foundation is currently in the middle of a five-day pre- and post-natal care training program for 40 defector-refugee women. The program, the first of its kind, is part of a broader education project targeting defector women, who form a large majority of the refugee population in South Korea.

A spokesperson for the organization told Daily NK, “The target group is 40 refugee women under 60 years of age who have experienced childbirth and raising children. Hitherto, people born in South Korea have been dispatched to act as pre- and post-natal carers, but in future it will be possible to offer North Korean-born helpers, providing more comfortable care for pregnant women.”

The foundation has been providing care and assistance to pregnant refugee women since 2011. Any defector woman who requires post-natal care can receive such assistance, which lasts from 40 days prior until 30 days after the baby is born. During this four to five week period, help is provided to mothers in the form of massages, basic food preparation, and essential household chores.

It is hoped that the defector women who complete the education program will be qualified to provide pre- and post-natal care services on the behalf of a range of agencies, including the North Korean Refugees Foundation itself. This will improve the organization's capacity to provide care, as well as providing new job opportunities for experienced defector women.
