China’s decision to prioritize the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a welcome move, according to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. Vice President Biden made his comments during a speech on America’s “rebalancing” toward Asia at George Washington University on Thursday.
Biden asserted that on the issue of North Korea, the U.S. is working more closely with both China and Russia than had been the case for the past 40 years. Praising China’s recent approach in particular, he said, “We welcome President Xi Xinping’s important statement: achieving a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, as that being a Chinese priority. Not just something they wish for, but a priority.”
After North Korea’s third nuclear test in February, China joined other members of the UN Security Council in unanimously passing Resolution 2094, which imposed sanctions on the North. There have also been rumors that China is also quietly enforcing some elements of the sanctions regime.
In light of what appears to be North Korea’s recent attempts to re-initiate the process of provocation followed by dialogue in an attempt to secure aid and assistance, Biden noted, “I’ve seen this movie before,” and added, “We will not countenance North Korea’s pattern of provoking a crisis and then insisting they be rewarded in order to cease and desist from the actions they are taking.”
Reaffirming that a resolution to the nuclear crisis must be accomplished before anything else, Biden concluded, “North Korea can have peace and prosperity like the rest of the region, but only without nuclear weapons. North Korea has a clear choice: It can choose a better path for its people, or continue down the road they’re on [sic.].”
