Firms in the Kaesong Industrial Complex have reported almost a billion dollars in cumulative losses since the closure of the inter-Korean manufacturing zone in April.

The news was revealed by the South Korean Ministry of Unification, which said that just over $600 million of the total sum, $910 million, has been confirmed so far.

The total is based on the reported losses of not only firms operating in the Kaesong zone but also others with links to such firms, such as suppliers. The total number of companies involved in the calculation is 234.

The Kaesong Industrial Complex ceased production after North Korea unilaterally withdrew its laborers from the zone on April 8th because, United Front Department chief Kim Yang Geon was reported by Chosun Central News Agency as saying, The South Chosun authorities and their warmongers are offending our dignity and trying to use it against us in their internecine civil war.

South Korea withdrew its last active staff from the zone on May 3rd.
