A Chinese fishing vessel and its crew that were captured on May 5th by an unknown group of North Koreans have been released.
Peoples Daily, the official publication of the Chinese Communist Party, reported in a brief dispatch today, Yu Xuejun, ship-owner of the Liaoning Generic Fishing No. 25222 from Dalian city in northeast China's Liaoning Province, told the Chinese embassy [in Pyongyang] that the fishermen aboard the boat were all safe on their way back around 3AM. The North Korean government has not confirmed the vessels release.
Citing a consular official in the North Korean capital, the article continued, "Yu told us that the fishermen are to continue fishing on the sea before heading back to China."
Yu had previously revealed that his vessel was being ransomed for 600,000 Yuan ($98,000). However, it appears that no money changed hands.
This is not the first occasion that Chinese fishing vessels have been captured and ransomed by groups of mysterious North Koreans, however. At the beginning of this year, three other fishing vessels were released following the payment of a ransom.
