North Korea has reopened overland tour routes for Chinese tourists. Visits to Pyongyang and Shinuiju, two of the most common destinations for tourists visiting the country from China, had been on hold since April 10th.
One travel agent based in Dandong, just across the Yalu River from Shinuiju, told Daily NK on the 17th, “We recently received word from the Chosun tourism authorities that they would resume the trips, and have been advertising for tourists since the beginning of May,” while adding, “The (Chinese) authorities are not particularly opposed to (North Korea) tours.”
An official from “Cheon-u International Travel Agency,” which is based in Yanbian Prefecture and handles North Korea tours for Chinese citizens in the region, added, “ We are forming plans for 3 nite-4 day trips to Pyongyang starting in June,” going on, “We set the schedule up after concluding that the situation has stabilized.”
However, smaller tour operators are apparently acting with circumspection. One such travel agency employee from Dandong explained, “Large (travel agencies) have created packages for Chosun, but the truth is that relatively smaller ones are being careful,” adding, “We plan to wait and see for a while longer before advertising for tourists.”
