The agency which controls inter-Korean cooperation funds, Korea Eximbank has once again called upon North Korea’s Foreign Trade Bank to repay the first $5.83 million tranche of food loans made by the progressive administrations of Kim Dae Jung and Roh Moo Hyun between 2000 and 2007.
The repayment date for the loan was June 7th this year. However, this is the fourth time the South Korean government has asked North Korea to make the repayment, following notifications made on June 8th, July 16th and September 27th. There has been no response from the North Korean side.
Kim Hyung Seok, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Unification, told reporters today, “The South Korean government’s position is that North Korea must repay the loan as per the inter-Korean agreement, and we urge them once again to fulfill that agreement.”
In particular, Kim pointed out, “The North Korean authorities did not repay the food loan in time, and on top of that are paying scant regard for the food insecurity of the people as they get ready to launch a missile.”
“The North Korean authorities are blowing a few years-worth of the people’s food by launching this missile,” Kim further emphasized. “I urge them to resolve this situation as soon as possible.”
