It has become exponentially more likely that the poisoning of a 46-year old South Korean missionary in the Sino-North Korean border region last August was done by a North Korean agent working undercover, after South Korean court documents appeared to confirm the story.
The information emerged during the sentencing of a former National Security Agency operative by a Seoul court yesterday. According to documentary evidence submitted by the prosecution in the case, ¡°Missionary Kim Chang Hwan died in August 2011 from being poisoned with bromide which North Korean national security agents use.¡±
Kim had been waiting for a taxi in front of a department store in Dandong when he suddenly began to froth at the mouth and fainted. He was transferred to a hospital, but died a few hours later. Dark bruises were found all over his body, raising the possibility that he might have been poisoned.
A mere 10mg of Bromide is enough to make an adult stop breathing and die of a heart attack. The agent who tried to assassinate controversial balloon activist Park Sang Hak in October 2011 was also planning to employ the same poisonous substance.
Commenting on the case, Yoo Jae Kil, who was detained in Dandong by the Chinese Ministry of State Security last March along with North Korean human rights activists Kim Young Hwan, told Daily NK, ¡°When I was being investigated, they mentioned ¡®missionary Kim Chang Hwan¡¯ and said that his death was the work of a North Korean NSA agent.¡± The two other South Koreans who were arrested with Yoo have confirmed that they heard the same thing.
¡°The agent explaining the reason for my arrest explained that ¡®we arrested you to stop that happening again on our patch¡¯,¡± Yoo went on.
