Yeonpyeong to Open Shelling Memorial

The ROK Marines are to open a memorial hall on Yeonpyeong Island next week in commemoration of the shelling of the island two years ago on November 23rd, 2010, an attack that took four lives, two military and two civilian.

A barber’s shop inside a military barracks that was shelled by North Korean artillery on that day has been turned into the memorial, which will be used to provide opportunities to learn more about the attack and to reinforce the need for vigilance in one of the Korean Peninsula’s most volatile neighborhoods.

Inside, it employs photos, videos and audio to document the events on the day of the shelling, and commemorates the names of all the soldiers who were on duty at the time.

The memorial hall, and a memorial tower in a nearby park commemorating those who died in the attack, will be unveiled the day after the second anniversary, on November 24th.
